Prayer Topic #3:
A Prayer of Repentance for the United States of America
Scripture Reading:
Psalm 33, Jeremiah 5:20-31, II Chronicles 7:12-22
Reflections of the Heart:
We are living in a time when many souls are depleted of strength in our nation. Corruption fills the land, and the earth is withholding its goodness from our citizens because of our greed and arrogance. Should we not consider our ways? The current spiritual climate in America demands that we each examine our motives, beliefs, and actions.
Scriptural Prayer:
Holy Father, we thank You for blessing the United States of America. Thank You for honoring our prayers as a nation and extending Your mercy toward us. You have blessed our nation beyond measure, but we have not always appreciated You or Your benefits. So today, we, Your children, come before You, humbling ourselves in Your sight to give You thanks and praise for all that You have done. Your Word is true and we can trust everything that You do. You love whatever is just and good. Your unfailing love fills the earth. You merely spoke and the heavens were created; You breathed the Word and all of the stars were born. You assigned boundaries to the seas and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs. Let the whole world fear You and let everyone stand in awe of You!
Generous Father, as a Church Family, we submit ourselves to the discernment and judgment of the Holy Spirit and acknowledge that our nation has grieved Him with our blatant rebellion. We have traded truth for lies in pursuit of our own selfish agendas. Lord, Your Word warns us that our hearts are the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. We are utterly ashamed to lift up our faces to You. The sins of our nation are piled higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens. From the days of our ancestors until now, this country has been steeped in sin. Yet, You have protected the United States of America from many unseen dangers. You have not allowed our enemies to triumph over us. And now, O God, what can we say after all of this? Once again, the people of our country have abandoned Your commands. We now see the results of our wickedness and our great guilt. But we have actually been punished far less than we deserve. So, as Your people, called by Your name, we humble ourselves and pray today, seeking Your face, and turning from our own wicked ways. Only then can we be assured that You will hear from heaven and will forgive our sins and restore our land.
Holy Spirit, help me to pray regarding the sins of __ in our nation, today:
Holy Spirit, without Your power working in us, we cannot have lasting change. Thoroughly search the hearts and examine the secret motives of the American people. Stir within the people of our nation the desire to know the Father’s ways, not just His acts. Convict the hearts of Christians in our nation so that true repentance will prevail in every church called by the name of Christ. Remind the people of God to think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. Help us all to put to death any sinful, earthly things that lurk within us. Give us all the courage to face ourselves and to admit our sins to the Father and to one another. Strengthen us to let go of anything that blinds us to the truth and holds us captive to sin and deception. Rid America of corruption and raise up leaders who are wise and who understand God’s ways, evidenced by them living honorably before Him. Give us all discernment to identify and follow leaders who aren’t just saying what our itching ears want to hear, but who will stand for righteousness and declare Your truth; men and women who are actually doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.
Eternal Father, as a nation, we realize that our sins are abominable and a stink to Your nostrils. But, Forgiving Father, as Your children, we stand before You and ask for Your mercy. Forgive our nation for the sins of racism; sexism; ageism; the attempt to dismantle the Voting Rights Act; increase of gambling; human trafficking; a lack of immigration reform; the random killing of African American men and boys; disparity between the haves and have nots; and the systematic breakdown of the nuclear family. Forgive our nation’s leaders for their bickering and infighting. Forgive us for speaking out on some sin and remaining silent about other sin. To You, we know that sin is sin and You expect us to rebuke all sin. Forgive Christians for standing before You with wicked hearts, perverted mouths, ungodly behavior, hatred toward authority, and unforgiveness. Father, we admit that we, Your church, operate in forms of godliness, but often deny the power of Your Holy Spirit. You desire a contrite heart. Holy Spirit, move throughout the American Church and trouble all of us until we repent as the Body of Christ. Purify us from our sins and we will be clean; wash us, and we will be whiter than snow. Create in us a clean heart O God, and renew a loyal spirit within us. Please do not banish us from Your presence and don’t take Your Holy Spirit from us. Lord, forgive me for (list any sins that You have committed). Holy Spirit, remind us all of those we need to forgive and help us to be quick to forgive. As for me, Holy Spirit, bring to my remembrance those I need to forgive. (Take a moment and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal names or faces of people that you may need to forgive. As He reveals them, say “I forgive name of person(s).” Now, trust the Lord to heal any wounds in your soul caused by unforgiveness.)
Holy Spirit, help every citizen of our nation not to yield to temptation; but deliver us all from the evil one.
Holy, holy, holy are You, Lord God, the Almighty ― the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come. You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. We exalt You above all else. In Jesus’ name, amen.
